WELLINGTON v. CANTERBURY. THE SOUTHERNERS DEFEATED. PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH. January 22. The Canterbury-Wellington match wan concluded to-day. Wellington eventually winning by three wickets. The pipy throughout the whole game was very disanpointing. Both teams were considered strong in batting, yet the display in this department was very poor. In each ot Canterbury’s innings two men made more than half the score, and the details of the ‘Wellington total show an almost similar result. To-day’s play proved the most interesting portion of the match, not on account, ot the runs scored, but because the varying fortunes of the game gave the advantage first to one and then to the other side. It looked a simple task for Wellington to get 90 runs on the good wicket with nine wickets in hand, yet the game lasted two and a-half hours, and the result was in doubt up to the end, Caxiterbury having as good a chance as Wellington up to a quarter of an. hour before the finish. The tide was effectually turned in favour of Wellington by Muilane’s fine innings. Callaway and Frankish bowled practically unchanged. The former kept a fine length rarely bowling a loose one. Frankish, too, was in good form, but did not last so .well: Midlane (14) and Weybourne (20) resumed the Wellington innings at 42 for one wicket. With 50 up. the latter was well taken at point by H. C. Ridley. Hickson filled the gap, and after scoring 3 the game became very slow, twenty minutes passing without a run. Finally the monotony was broken, by Hickson snicking one from Frankish, which Boxshall promptly held. Clarke joined Midlaue and started in good style, reaching double Jig. ures in four strokes, but in attempting another he was well taken by Harman at mid-on. Tucker and Holdaworth were soon disposed of. but Crombie and Midlano made another, stand. Runs came freely, and when Crombie returned one to Callaway the total was 98 for seven wickets. Even yet Canterbury appeared to have au'excellent chance, as only the tail whs left. With the advent ot Uphnm, however Midlane changed his tactics. Evidently realising that if runs were to be made he must get them, he commenced to force the pace, and being well hacked up hv Upham. the necessary runs were knocked off without the loss of any further wickets. The following are the scores:
