LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mr James Prou.se, the well-known sawmiller, of Levin, has agreed to furnish the Settlers' Association at Motu, Poverty Pay, with a report on the timber resources of that district.

Dr McArthur, SM., fihed Joseph Parre tt and Hannah McCarthy 10s. each yesterday for drunkenness. John McCartney was remanded! to Levin to answer q charge of having stolen, certain articles i of clothing-from- a resident of that town. Charles McKeegan, charged with the theft of an organ 'and 'accessories from Bartolo Rosso, was remanded until this morning. !'. A meeting of the St. Patrick’s Day . Demonstration Committee- was held at St. Patrick’s Hall. Boulcott street, yesterday evening. The chair was occupied by Mr B. Nolan, and -there was a fairly large attendance of members. It was decided to hold a sports meeting, with , art union, on Saturday, the 16th March, ■ and an Irish concert in the evening. Ifc was also resolved that -the City Council should be communicated with, and asked to grant the use of the Basin Reserve for the sports gathering. “ A woollen serge-like material is shortly,” says the London “ Daily Telegraph,” “to (be issued to the troops, and in this practically their whole work will be performed. The colour is described as yellowish-fawn, which is not far from the now familiar khaki. Bedford cord of the same neutral tint will be used for riding breeches. It is not, however, intended that the new clothing will entirely supersede the very styjish dress which docs so much justice to the fine physique i of our soldiers. On full dress parades the historical blue and scarlet and hla-k will still charm the appreciafive women of all classes who equally dote upon the military, whether arrayed in the dull hues of khaki or the most brilliant of the traditional scarlets and bines.” The charges made by the Valuation Department for adjusting the valuation rolls are meeting with the disapproval of many of the local authorities concerned. In most cases they have been accepted as a matter of course, hut the New Plymouth Harbour Board has resolved Ito enter an emphatic protest against the charges. After a -warm discussion, during which the new system was generally adversely criticised, the following resolution was agreed to; —“That whilst under the former system- notices of alterations were received direct from the parties concerned by the secretary, and the rolls altered at once by bun, the present system requires receipt by the secretary of jiotice of alterations, copying and forwarding to the ValuerGeneral, and receipt again from the latter and finally alteration of the roils by the secretary, which means more than twice the work, in addition to which 'be Board is required to pay the sum of £323 for work which is outside the re- . quirements and is of no advantage to it, and the Board therefore protests against ' the charge.” A further motion requesting the co-operation of local bodies in the protest was also agreed to.

The following players will represent tho Wellington Polo Club in its match against the Manuwutu Club at Miramar on Saturday next:—D. G A. Cooper, L. Tripp, 11. Johnston and C. J. Crawford. An open-air feto was held on the recreation ground, Potono, yesterday in connection with St. Augustine’s Church. The usual stalls were erected, and a programme of sports and races was curried out. Tho Potono Grass i3and was present. In the evening a display of lireworks was given. An, interesting event on the tapis today is the Wellington Provincial Gun Club’s ,2150 handicap, to ho fired at the Siiovv Grounds, Lower Mutt. Trains stepping at the show ground platform will leave Wellington at 9.15 a.m., 10.25 a.n;., 12.5 p.m,, 1.15 p.m. and 2.30 p.m., returning from Lower ilntt at 5.15 p.m and 7.5 p.m. Our Palmerston North correspondent records the sudden death of Air J.
