THE SIXTH CONTINGENT.

IN CAMP AT NEWTOWN PARK. All the men are now in uniform, and will be completely Equipped to-day. There arc over 400 horses in the camp at present. A member of the contingent was yesterday deprived of his uniform and ordered out of the lines for drunkenness. It. has been ascertained that, there are vacancies in the New Zealand contingents at present serving in South Africa as follows:—Second, 80 men; Third, 56- Fourth, 31: Fifth, 26—a total of 193. A camp order has been issued requesting company sergeants to obtain the names of men in the present camp who desire to join any of the former contingents, and to hand in the names to the orderly tent without delay. Preference as to joining their old contingents will be “given to men who have returned from South Africa. There arc persistent rumours in the air that a seventh contingent is to b* raised as soon as the sixth is on the water. Sergeant J. N. Leslie, of the Sixth Contingent, lias been presented with a fine pair of field-glasses. The presentation was made at the' camp by Mr A. W. Blanchard, of Butler Brothers, on behalf of the sergeant’s late employers, Messrs Primrose and Leslie, of Gisborne.

A FAREWELL DINNER. The butchers among the members of the Sixth Contingent were last night entertained at dinner at the Trocade.ro by those engaged in the-wholesale and retail branches of the trade 1 in Wellington. Tlie dinner was in part given in honour of Troopers T. Brown. P. C. Luxford, J. Philp, H. Clark and J. Martiudale, of this city, and "district. The three .first-named- troopers ax - © sous of master butchers of WoJliug' oa. About eighty- were present at the dinner. Mr W. J. Garrett, chairman of -the Master. Butchers’ Union, presided, and Mr C F. Worth, chaii-uiaui of the Operative Butchers’ Union, occupied the vise-chair. The chairman proposed “The Guests of the Evening,” and at tho conclusion of a very appropriate, speech, handed , to each of the Wellington .troopers present a gold ring, suitably inscribed, as a memento from .then* fellow-tradesmen. During the evening songs were reiictmed by Sergeant Jackson, Trooper Reave. Messrs Bally, Bust and others. PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTIONS FOR THE SEND-OFF. , There has already been a. generous response on the part of the people of Wellington to tho appeal for. funds todefray tho expenses of the send-off to the Wellington and southern, portion of the Sixth Contingent.
