ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

A nasty accident occurred on the Mawhera yesterday morning, by which three men were injured. Prior to unloading the Mawliera’s cargo of coal it was found necessary to remove a ventilator on the small bri dgo deck amidships. This three men —J. Warnock, C. Barnett and T. Corner—proceeded to do, but .hiding it was too mncii for them the steam winch was brought ’ into requisition. Immediately tho heavier strain was put upon the ventilator it flew- up with a .jerk, which threw Corner back on to tho deck, and crushed 1 the hands of Warnock and Barnett, who were holding on to the top of tho ventilator, against a heavy piece of timber overhead. Corner, falling on the iron combing of the middle hatch, sustained! 'a small cut on tho chin, a bad bruise on the jaw and a wound several inches in length on the scalp. He was attended l to by- Dr Henry and then taken to his home. Warnock and Barnett were immediately removed to the Hospital. Tho former had one finger of his right hand amputated, and Barnett had tho tips taken off two fingers : on each•hand. At the Hospital yesterday afternoon Mr James Ashcroft, J.P., held an inquest on the body of John McDonald Bussell, a wharf labourer, who died just previously from injux-ics self-inflicted on .Sunday. Particulars of the occurrence were published yesterday morning. The jjury returned a verdict that deceased committed suicide while in a state of unsound mind. TKESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, January 21. The body of a man, name unknown, was found floating in the harbour this morning. It had evidently been in the water tor about a week. , • A boy throe years old, a son of the Rev C. C. Harrison, of the Helping Hand Mission, was accidentally drowned in the river at Warkworth. DUNEDIN, January 21. A man named Hector McCaugban, an old resident of Abbotsford, attempted to commit suicide this morning. His wife missed him, and in searching found him suspended from a rafter in tlje byre. She got assistance and had the body cut down.. The man wasi insensible, and remained in the same state ail day'. His condition is precarious.-
