BOWLING.

WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES.

The ccntest for the Singles Championship of Wellington took place on the Wellington Club’s green yesterday. The high wind that prevailed made it very difficult for the men'to p!Jy up to anything like form, but with the green in first-class condition ■ some exceedingly good play was exhibited. In the first round an, exciting contest took place .between Bury (Newtown) and N. McLean (Wellington). The scoring was very oven throughout, and at the twenty-first bead the board showed 16 all. On the play off McLean took tho jack into the ditch aud lay two, and Bary, being unable to draw tho shot, lost the heat. The match between Locluo (Wellington) and Kibblewhito (Newtown) was also vorypelose. It ivas tot. until tho last head but' one that the Wellington representative got a lead of one, which ho increased to two on the last head. The contest eventually was narrowed down to Lockic and Reich, both members of the Wellington Club, and as both men have a reputation for being exceedingly hard to heat, a close finish was anticipated. Both men gave uu exceedingly good exhibition of the game, but Reich was in excellent form, and playing with great stoadinoes and with splendid nerve, won tho game and the championship by 25 points to 14. The match was walched with keen interest by a large number of players, and at the conclusion tho winner was loudly cheered. The first prize is a gold medal, value £2 10s, and the second prize a gold medal value £1 10s. The balance of the entry money, which will be supplemented by the balance from the championship next year, will be devoted to purchasing a cup or shield, to be w on twice running or three times in succession, and to have the winners' names engraved on, it. The visitors were entertained by the Wellington' Club at luncheon, a very nice cold collation being provided by Mr Oodbor. This over. Mi- W. Gray, who presided, proposed tho toast of “The Visitors." and in doing so expressed tho hope that this was merely tho forerunner of many such gatherings, which might hereafter include one or two of the country clubs.

Mr .T. B. Pago (Victoria), Mr Longlou (Tlioni(lon). and Mr Swlnoy (Newtown) replied. the last-named lieartily congratulating Mi -1 T. Ballinger on having initiated and arranged what had proved so successful a contest. Mr Ballinger said this had been a pet scheme of his for some years, hut it had been a difficult matter to get it worked up. Now that it had been started it was hound to go on, and ho thought it would be oven more suce, essfill next year. (Applause.) Messrs Laing (Bluff Hill) and Smith (Napier) also responded.
