CABLE COMMUNICATION.
THE CAPE TO AUSTRALIA SCHEME.
(Received January 22, 6.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 22,
In referring to the recommendation by the Secretary of State for the Colonies that the Cape to Australia cable scheme should bo accepted by the colonial Governments, the “ Argus ” says that the request of the Eastern Extension Cable Company to deal directly with the public is nothing more than the universal right of a competitor. To refuse it, says the paper in question, would amount to a, denial of justice, The Postmaster-General of New South Wales (the Hon W. R. Crick) has the courage of his convictions, and ho says the company’s offer may safely ho accepted. Apparently the achievement of this additional .bond of Empire and aid to commerce now depends upon tho decision of Victoria.
