ELECTRIC LIGHTING AT AUCKLAND

A DISPUTE WITH THE COUNCIL,

PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, Saturday. At a meeting of the City Council the Mayor called attention to the fact that a private firm intended to light its business premises in Queen street, from Wellesley street to Wakefield street, with electric light. Ho said this was not legal, and was a contravention of the Electric Lines Act. A person could not take the electric current beyond the building in which it was generated. If the Council intended to apply to Parliament for power to let a contract for the lighting of the city, it was not right that the eyes should be picked out of the city. The Mayor said that when the Premier was in Auckland a deputation waited on .him in reference to this matter. He presumed the Council intended to follow this matter up and ask Parliament for power to let the electric lighting of the city he taken up by contract. On the Mayor’s motion the question was referred to the leeal committee for the purpose of inquiry.
