The extremely unfavourable weather which prevailed yesterday greatly hampered the movements of the shipping in the port-, A southerly wind sprang up during the morning, which gradually gathered in strength, and being accompanied by a continuous downpour of rain, effectually, put a stop tcv the discharge or shipment of cargo. On this account the departures'of all steamers, with one exception—the Rotorua —had to ho postponed until to-day. These include the Te Anau, Omanere, Corinna nud a number of the "mosquito fleet.” The rain also interfered with tbs loading and discharge of the three oceangoing steamers at present working cargo at the Queen’s Wharf. The weather on the

weet coast of the North Island is evidently very bad, for a telegram received from Wanganui yesterday stated that the Moa had put back through stress of weather. At a late hour last night there were no signs of the steamer Waiwera, then 28 hours out from Napier, the Mana, from Patea, or iManaroa, from Wanganui. The two latter ;are evidently sheltering from the force of Sthe southerly gale, while the big steamer is not likely to show up before daylight, as the weather is extremely dirty in the Strait. The Mawhera will adjust compasses in the harbour this morning before taking her departure for Westport. The Ribston will not leave for Auckland before to-morrow evening at the earliest. The Blenheim steamer Pania was placed an the Patent Slip yesterday morning to undergo her annual inspection. The Queen of the South was successful in working the To Awaite and IT"ckhead station/ on the East Cease oh Monday, fine weather being expeiienced. She will leave again for Foxton to-day. THE TE ANAU. The Te Anau, from Auckland, Gisborne and Napier, has 650 tons (including some 3000 bags of sugar and 1500 sacks of kauri gum) to put out at this port, 82 tons for Lyttelton, and 102 tons for Dunedin. The heavy and continuous downpour of rain yesterday rendered it necessary to defer her departure for Lyttelton and Dunedin until 3 p.m. to-day. The Te Anau will take cargo for Timaru and Oamaru. * THE NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY. Mr J. H. Burner, local manager for the New Zealand Shipping Company, has been advised that on tne Wakanui being placed in dry dock at Lyttelton it was discovered that the slight leak reported when the vessel was in Wellington' was caused by a fewl-Xse rivets, and that the necessary repairs would only occupy 'some five or ;six hours at the outside. She will come out of dock to-day and proceed to Timaru, Ito take in a quantity of cargo, thence to Wellington. She is expected to arrive 'here on Saturday next, i The Waimate, Captain Hamson, is to 'leave Auckland to-day for Waitara, Wanganui and Wellington. The local office exipectsher to arrive about Wednesday next. CHANGES IN THE UNION COMPANY’S OFFICERS. On the arrival of the Omapere from Die East Coast yesterday Captain Shaw, together with Messrs Campbell and Hargreaves, Irst and second officers, and Mr J. Low, purser, received orders to join the Mawhera, which from to-day will take up The running hitherto . performed by tne Omapere. The last-named steamer will, igo into the coal trade in charge of Captain Brophy, late chief officer of the Corinna, with Mr Lacy (late second of the Te Anau) as chief officer, and Mr Proudfoot (formerly of the Janet Nicoll and more recently of the Tarawera) as second. Mr Tate, late second officer of the Rotomnhana, will ioin the Corinna as chief, his duties on the Rotomahana having been assumed by Mr Jamieson, late second officer of the Hawaa. Mr Dougins, late third officer of the Te Anau, has been promoted a step, and Mr Flynn, a new officer in the company, is to assume the duties of third officer. Mr McKirdy, late second engineer of the Wainui, will have charge of the Mawhera’s engine-room, with Messrs J. Robinson (late tnird of the Monowai) and Wallace as second and ' thifu engineers respectively. 1 THE INTERCOLONIAL SERVICE. | The local office of the Union Company is advised that the Waikare left Sydney pt 8 p.m. on Saturday, with some 200 tons, of cargo to put out here. She is duo here about midnight to-night.
