CONTEST AT PALMERSTON. SPECIAL TO THE " TIMES." The final selection from Verdi’s “II Trovatore ” was played by the bands on Friday night to a closely packed and attentive audience. In thecourseof his remarks, Mr Schwartz eulogised the playing of the Wellington Garrison Band and the Wanganui Garrison Band, and complimented Mr Herd and Mr Crichton, the respective bandmasters, on their success. The judge thought that the bands assembled should feel proud to have such a model as the first-prize band ; and he added that, though he had heard a good many bands play during his musical experience, he had never heard such an artistic rendering of any movement as that given by the horn solo of the Wellington Garrison Band. It was so delightful that he had felt quite affected, and again he complimented Mr Herd. The prizes were presented to the winning bands and soloists by the Mayoress of Palmerston (Mrs Wood).
