COLLISION BETWEEN THE.HUIA AND GERTIE. A collision between the coastal steamers Huia and Gordie occurred as tbov were staaminffup the Wanganui river on Saturday morning, both vessels being slightly injured through the accident. The Huia crossed the bar some distance ahead of the Gertie, but the latter gradually gained on the Wellington trader, and at about-a mile from the wharf both steamers were abreast. Oh reaching a narrow part of the channel Captain Huggins, of the Huia, stopped hia engines to avoid a probable collision, but the Gertie taking tbe ground at the same time, the Huia struck her amidships, carrying away her gangway, plate and rail; she, too. sticking on tbe sandbank. It is understood that before taking the ground the Gertie carried away one of the gn'debuoys, and the chain attached, becoming foul of the Tfuia’s propeller, broke two blades off. Both steamers remained aground for about half an hour, when they floated off and steamed uo to the wharf. The Collector of Customs at Wanganui has hold h, preliminary inquiry into the affair, and the evidence has been forwarded to the Marine Department. Tho Huia was placed on the Patent S ip yes- , terday morning and inspected by Captain Kennedy (who is acting as surveyor for the Marino Underwriters in_ Csp’ain BendalTs absence at Farewell Spi’), when in addition to the broken blades it was discovered that a few rivets in the forecastle bud become loosened by tbo collision. The necessary repairs are- being executed bv Messrs D. Robertson end Co., and as a spare propeller is available the little steamer is expected to be ready for sea to-day.
