EDUCATION BOARD APPOINTMENTS.

After discussing the matter at some length at its meeting yesterday,! the Education Board decided that it would,in future furnish the press with the names of those teachers applying for vacancies whom it was decided should' be recommended to the various committees for positions under the Board. It was pointed out that under the existing arrangement this information was not .regularly : supplied, but that the reporters got it by irregular means; that no adequate reason existed for secrecy in regard to the matter ; and that it was far better that the Board should furnish an ofiicial Hat of recommendations in a regular manner, both for the information of the unsuccessful applicants and the public, than that it should be obtained surreptitiously, and published without authority. The ohaitman, Mr Buchanan and Mr Bradey held . that the information should not be made public until the committees had had the opportunity of confirming the Board’s selection, as such a course might lead to misunderstanding with . the former bodies, who might feel slighted. : i . ..; . s In reply, it was pointed out by Messrs Hogg, McCardlo and others that it was practically impossible to keep the matter secret, 1 and, consequently, nothing was gained, by observing secrecy. In accordance with the resolution arrived at the secretary of tho Board supplied the press with the following information concerning vacancies considered by the Board in committee:— ■ . Head teacher, Waihakeke School (salary 4-80 and residence) —Miss Mary Matthews, Havelock. Head teaoheiv Ponatahi school (-£BO and rooms)—Miss, Ada Bairatow, Clareville. Head teacher, Korokoro School (salary -£BO) —Miss Ada Banks, Mannkau. ' Head teacher. South Peatherston School (salary -890) —Francis Townsend, Shannon. First assistant, Te Aro School (salary, -8220) —Mr John Kay, Mauriceville East. Assistant, Newtown School (salary, -880) —Miss Emily Cooper, Mount Cook Boys’ School. si Assistant, Hastwell School-(salary, -880) —Miss Jessie Davidson, Clyde quay School.
