The keen struggle for the championship of Staffordshire which has lasted some time, has at last coma to an end, In the earlier part of tho contest Mr Draycott kept the lead for a long time, and was by many expected to score a success. Later, however, Mr Labone kept steadily to his purpose, ai.d against discouraging results at last drew level. Another effort, and he obtained tho load for the first time, and since that success he has kept the lead and won the match. When tho score reached 9 to 7, it was impossible for Mr Labone to ;lose, but according to tho conditions it was just possible the result could he drawn. Tho odds wore therefore in favour of Mr Labone, Tho twentieth game proved the deciding one. It was a Two Knights’ Opening, and the game had to be left unfinished, tho position boisg in tho Handsworth player’s favour. Before the resumption of play lilr Draycott taw the hopelessness of his position, and wrote resigning it. The full score was therefore—Labone, 10 wins ; Draycott, 7 wins ; and 3 games had teen drawn. The match proceeded in the most gentlemanly fashion ; ho hitch in arrangements, and each player was ready at the times appointed with admirable regularity. The disparity in the score is not great, and Mr Draycott would feel justified in issuing a challenge for a renewed contest in the future. The following was the 17th game in tho contest;— Ruy Lopez.
