ALLEGED EXCURSION FARES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In your issue of December 18th, you publish a list of fares to be charged by tho Union Steam Ship Company, and in a local it seta forth that “ cheap excursion faros to Lyttelton aio advertised in another column by the Union Company.” Tho sacrifice of tho Company in allowing excursionists to travel for 35a is astounding. A 355-rciurn fare to Lyttelton? I recognise that tho Company can charge what they like, but I object in foio to their stating that this is a “cheap excursion fare.” Everybody who has travelled to Lyttelton will bo aware that the ordinary faro to that port has been for a long time 355, and now that the Christmas holidays are coming on wo certainly expect some ‘ concession in return dor tho inconvenience we are put to in being accommodated with “sleeping apartments” in the ” cargo bold.” Twice have I travelled down, to Lyttelton, and each time tho boat baa been so crowded that nearly all tho male passengers have bad to sleep in the hold. I have made a mistake ; I said “ sleep,” but I will guarantee that Dickens* fat boy would not have slept under tho circumstances. —I am, &c., Svenqat.l.
