Breaking Up for the Holidays. Most of the primary schools in Wellington “ broke np ” for the Christmas holidays on Thursday. In most cases no prizes were, presented, as many of the committees have come to the conclusion that it is bettor to spend the money necessary for prizes in giving the children excursions by rail, and in other school treats.

THE TERRACE SCHOOL.* At tho Terraco School Mr Georgo Moc, tho chairman of the School Committee, presented the prizes, and, in doing so, congratulated tho staff on the result of the year’s work, and also mentioned tho largo increase in tho attendance of scholars, who now number GSO. A largo number of friends and parents of the scholars, and most of the members of tho committee, were present. Tho headmaster, Mr MacMorran, mentioned that Mr Roundtree had been promoted to a first asaistantship at Carterton, and on bohalf of the boys of Mr Roundtree’s class (tho fourth standard) Mr Moe presented him with some half-dozen volumes by •• well-known authors. , _ Later on Mr MaoMorran also mentioned that Miss Cornish, who ha 4 been connected with the school as pupil and teacher all hor life, was also leaving to take up her residence in the South Island, and after tho prizes had been presented she was presented by her fellow-teachers with a bandsome tea service, Mr G. The Thorndon State schools broke up ye?terday morning for iho Christmas holidayh. There was no ceremony, tho children being merely presented with the examination passes. Tho giving ot prizes was also dispensed with on this occasion. TR ARO SCHOOL. The above school also broke up onThursday, when Mr Roith, chairman of committee, made a few-remarks appropriate to the occasion. The dux medal was presented to Julia Friihauf, who secured the _ highest marks in tho scholarship examination. The other scholarship winners wore Alfred Bennett and Charles Webb. Mr Keith also presented the attendance certificates to those awarded them. There was no presentation of prizes. The money saved is to bo expended on a piouio, which will bo held later on. MOUNT COOK. The Mount Cook Boys 1 School broke up at midday on Thursday for tho Christmas holidays. There was no distribution of prizes,., tho boys being dismissed without ceremony of any kind. NEWTOWN CATHOLIC SCHOOL. Tho Newtown Catholic School u broke up ” for the Christmas holidays on Thursday night, when an entertainment was given by the pupils entitled " Beauty and the Boast,” which was performed with much credit. At its conclusion-"the Rev Father Ainsworth said that the result of tho examination had been highly satisfactory and the discipline of tho pupils perfect. % Tho number of pupils sent up for examination was 1-iC, and out of those 139 hod passed. Tho examination had been a most searching one, and the rev gentleman, who was one of tho examiners, said that ho was quite agreeable to allow the school to bo examined by the State school examiners. Ho complimented the sisters on the good work they had done at the school. . }

KHANDALLAH PRIZE DISTRIBUTION. The annual distribution of prizes at tho Kbandallaii State School;, took place last night. Before the ceremony, refreshments, which had been kindly provided -by Mrs Meadoworoffc and Miss Vickers, were handed round, and tho children, undei the supervision of Mr A. H. Jenkins, tho headteacher, gave an exhibition of calisthenics. > The Rev James Paterson presided, and after expressing tho pleasure he felt in doing bo; cunplimontod the children on tho ‘admirable manner in which’th,oy had carried out their drill, and on their general appearanoo and neatness.
