CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the City , Council was hold last night. Present —The Mayor (Mr H. X). Bell), Councillors Ander- . son, Lingard, Willoston, Fraser, McGill, Higginbottom, Myers, Smith and Devine. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor Lindsay. Two residents of Stafford street waited upon the Council, and asked that something should be done in the way of drainage to carry away the storm water from. the lower slopes of Mount Victoria, which flooded their gardens. The City Surveyor was instructed to prepare a report as to what protection work was necessary, and the cost thereof. The City Solicitor reported that he had issued writs of ejectment on several leaseholders and tenants of Aurora terrace' for encroachments. The cases could not come on for hearing until after the long vacation ; of the Supreme Court. The City Deserves Committee recommended:—That a reply be sent to Mr A. G. Tain© that, by the teems of his lease, ho is under obligation to keep the house at Karori in repair. That tenders be invited for. the lease of the following sections of Town Belt—Sections 7 and 8. Kilbiraie district j section 52, Tinakori district ; section 48, Terraco district: the term to he 14 years, subject to all the usual conditions. - That the account of .£9 17a sent in by the poundkeeper for losses on unclaimed cattle from 29th October, 1895, to 20th September, 1896, be paid. Adopted. The Mount Street Committee reported that they* were of opinion that no further land should be taken as it would be an expensive work to widen the street, and would after be useless without taking a similar width from Mr Bethune's; property at the corner of Mount street and Wellington terrace. They recommended that the resolution, of November sth bo rescinded, and the matter be allowed to rest as it is. The report was adopted. The report of the Public Works Committee was adopted. Accounts amounting to .£590818s 6d were passed for payment, as was also an imprest wages account for .£2250 for wages and contract payments falling due before the next meeting of the Council.
