BUSH FIRES.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Stratford, December 17. Bush fires. which have been prevalent during the lace spell of dry weather, assumed dangerous proportions yesterday, owing to a strong northerly wind. Jn several cases dwellings narrowly escaped being, burned, and in one ease a two-storied building of ton rooms, the residence of Mr E. G, Allsworth. the editor of the Egmont Settler, situated in the suburbs of Stratford on the East road, was only saved by the efforts of the. Stratford Fire Brigade, which, assisted by a number of townsmen, fought the fire for nearly four hours, the butbuilfiings being several times on fire. Heavy rain fell later, and all danger is now averted. The ruin is a great relief to many settlers.
