FRANCE IN THE PACIFIC.
Her Claim for the Control of the New Hebrides.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.— Copyright Received December 15, G.lO p.m. Sydney, December 15.
Mr IJigginson, of tho French New Hebrides Company, who has just returned from a visit to France, says the destiny of the islands is that they should become a French possession, and to effect this is tho immediate purpose of the French company, which already owns two-thirds of the land in the group.' He characterises the present dual control as a wretched failure; They had Civilisation all round the group, yet the islands were without any civilised authority. The condition was practically one of anarchy*, and if right is might it was inevitable that the group should become
a French possession. Great Britain and France, he considers, could easily settle the matter between themselves, but the former had to consider. Australian susceptibilities and sentiment.
London, December 14. The British newspapers are unanimous in the opinion that France is preparing to make a bold bid for the comluorcial trade of the Australian colonies.
