Both Her Majesty and the ex-Empress arc fond of the oldfashioned style of needlework. The Queen bestows her handiwork upon her tenants at Balmoral and Windsor. The ex-Empress Eugenie sends hers to poor convents. U is a curious and little known fact that the Queen incurred a fine of 7s l»d for having allowed aix weeks to elapse before registering the birth of the present Duke of Edinburgh. The Duchess of Portland is the tallest duchess in the world. The visiting card used by the German Emperor is four times the size of an ordinaryone. Verdi, the composer of “ 11 Trovatore,” is a horse breeder ns well as a musician. His paddocks on his country estate, near Genoa, are among the finest in Italy. Verdi has little music at home, and seldom visits the opera. W, S. Gilbert, of comic opera fame, says : “I have no ear for music, but I have a very sensitive ear for rhythm ; it is precisely the difference between time and tune. I am very fond of music, but I don’t know a discord when I hear one ; on the other hand, the slightest error in time, which would probably escape a musician, would jar more gratingly on my ear. 1 *
