CITY COUNCIL.
THE DRAINAGE WOEKS. Several objections to drainage works were heard at a special meeting of tho City Council last evening. The meeting was attended by the Mayor, Councillors Harris, Harconrt, Devine, Penty, Tanner, Anderson, Smith, Myers and Willeston. The Drainage Engineer (Mr E. L. Meatayer) was also present. The first objector Was Mr James Barry. It is proposed to lay a pipe drain through from Hobson street to Thorndon quay, and Mr Barry objected to the drain going across his property. He wished Hobson street to be formed right through to Thorndon quay. If this was done he would give his land at a valuation to the Corporation, and give the proceeds to the Old Men’s Home.
The Council decided, on the motion of Councillor Harcourt, seconded by Councillor Anderson, that an estimate of forming Hobson street through to Thorndon quay should be obtained. Mr Henry Beudor, Tasman street, complained that a bank at the end of his property on tho line of tho intersecting sewer was not secure, and ho was afraid it would give way. Councillor Harris moved that any damage done to tho hank on Mr Bender’s property by the drainage work be repaired. This was seconded by Councillor Smith and carried.
Messrs Philip Jenkins and George Tattle objected to the tunnel going through their property. Mr Tattle asked that a sub-committee of the Council should be appointed to visit his property. Councillor Harris asked what Mr Tattle would consider fair compensation. Mr Tattle thought the Corporation should replace the drains on his property and give him -660.
It was subsequently decided, on the motion of Councillor Harris, with regard to tho objections of Messrs Tattle and Jenkins that the work bo proceeded with in accordance with the plans, and that all existing drains and house connections ho made good.
