CARTERTON.

A meeting of the North Island members of the National Dairy Association is to be held at Hawera. on sth July to discuss the advisableness of forming a separate association for the North Island. There is no doubt as to the necessity for such a proceeding and I trust the meeting, .trill be largely attended. Such an important step if given effect to will not mean working in antagonism to the South Island. Our interests are identical, but it is necessary the association should be worked from Wellington, It is not only the capital of the colony, but is the chief port. With an executive in Wellington, the interests of produce exporters can be mure readily and directly looked after. The Department of Agriculture is taking a lively interest in the dairy industry, and the executive of the National Dairy Association should be at hand to secure any and every advantage that can be had to advance the trade. Its importance is growing rapidly, and now that Mr J. B. McEwan's services have been secured to the colony, we may hope' for its still further development. Mr McEwan will give the North Island more attention than it has had in the past, and the result will be an increase in the number of co-operative dairies. After his return from Edendale he is coming to the North Island to open a dairy school and he will visit the Wairarapa on his way north. His presence is looked forward to with a good deal of interest. There is plenty of room in the Wairarapa for several more companies, and if they start it means an increase of settlers and improved trade to the towns. The two factories at Carterton distribute £IO,OOO a year amongst their milk suppliers and nearly the whole of that money is spent in the district, freight and material being about the only items taken out of it. Dalefield factory ia mating preparations to manipulate 3000 gallons of milk per day for next season, and Taratabiis also getting ready for a much larger supply of milk than they had 'last season.
