Byrnes, Attorney-General, referring to tho action of tho Rowing Association at Sydney in ordering tho Now South Wales crew to withdraw from tho contest because ono of tho Victorian crew was alleged to have racß'd'for cash in a bicycle inco; said that if tho crow had withdrawn it would have been a death-blow to international contests. Ho considered there was nothing in tho point raised, and looked with great concern on arbitrary definitions regarding professionalism being introduced into rowing. 'The his mind “a professional ’’ was a man who applied bis skill for professional purposes, and all tho colonics ought to agree as to a definition of amateur, which should cover the whole of ■ Australia. Mr Quist, of Now South Wales, said tho Victorian crow had boon formed long before tho Now South Wales crew'loft Sydney, end it tho Bowing Association had wanted to taka exception, it shahid hliyu dopo'ep beforo tho Victorian erdw left Melbourne. In refusing to obey the Association ho was guided by the rule that men should bo recognised us amateurs when Ticccpf.nl ns such by ibeir own colony. Ho considered ho would have acted in an unsportsmanlike manner if ho had withdrawn. No doubt ho would bo censured by tbo Association, bat in what ho had dono ho was supported by the whole of tho crew. Mr G. E. Upward, tho Victoria coach, endorsed tho views of Mr Quist.
