CITY IMPROVEMENTS.

Among, the many new houses lately # erected throughout the city, the two on Wellington terrace built for Miss Warburton by Mr Petheriok are specially noticeable. For their size, ! heir excellent arrangement, solidity of construction, the loftiness of the rooms and their number, and for plain massive solid work and excellence of construction we have seen nothing like .them. More comfortable-well-finished houses wo have - not seen for sometime. Each building covers a space of 66ft x 42ft, and contains nine rooms pn the ground floor; also every convenience in the shape of outbuildings, tho approach to which is covered by a wide verandah, giving access to the outbuildings without .being exposed to the .weather.,. The- whole of the" back “yard is covered in asphalt, giving a clean and neat appearance to the back of the. premises. The height of the rooms-on the - ground floor is 12 feet in the clear.' .The drawing-room and dining-rdoms have, neat cornices, largo bay-windows (and rpassivo wood mantels, with car red front panel, fluted pilasters and neat Minton tiles lot into this caps and base, giving the mantels a neat And handsome appearance. The front hall is Bft wide and 43ft in lengtl, with a handsome arch and folding-doors glazed W.ith variegated' cathedral glads. The whole of tho doors are six-panelled, with Heavy beloction. moulds. Tho whole of the Work is finished - in the very best possible maimer, and the timber used for this purpose is heart of red pine. The first, floor ;is approached by a handsome staircase leading out of tho hall; the stair having a massive octogan newel with heavy panelled spandrel and continued handrail neally-’polished. Tire first floor contains six large bedrooms and bathroom, the front rooms having two handsome wardrobes in each room, with gas fires and neat mantles. The landing and passage is 45 feet long and Y feet wide, with neat arch and large linen press. This landing leads on to a’large and handsome balcony, partly enclosed ; with coloured glass, and can be used in all weathers, being perfectly sheltered, and 'is most comfortable and convenient. The buildings ' are lighted throughout with electricity, and’have handsome electroliers, and gas has been laid on to: all fireplaces so that either gas or coal may be used. There is , also a Fletcher gas cooking stove fixed in brick chimney, beside a, large kitchen range, and hot and cold water laid oh to all iparts of the premises. The front entrance is covered with neatMlnton tiles, and tho houses are enclosed With a heat iron fence with - concrete base and massive moulded posts. The buildings were designed by Mr E. W. Petherick, architect, and .the builder is Mr James Edwards. The plumbers’ Work has been carried out by Mr Geo. Eemmington, the painters’work by Messrs Nicoland Petherick, and the bricklayers’ work by Mr I Dement. ~. . . - ■
