In response to tlio invitation of tho Wellington Kacing Club a number of spectafofß attended at the ' Hutt Park Kacccouraa yesterday afternoon to witness the trial of '■Gray's" starting machine, one qf which imd been erected' at the Thompson Mile starting post. The following horses were lined up, in front of the “tapes”:—Eeyiew. Bona Fide, Finmcney, Farmer Boy, Swordfish, Bouquet, The Kincher, Overseer and Austral. After the horses had been taken up to the tapes to get them used tbit, the starting Ipver was released for the first time,' and it worked without the slightest friction. Some of the horses dfd not quite , qnderstqpd the new appliance, bqt after feeing started again a few tunes they approached the “ tapes ” with confidence, and from - a standing start they were released in very even line, considering it was the first occasion they had been tried. The starting machine gave every satisfaction, and the spectators present were wall pleased with its utility. The Club have so far decided to oi eot tho starting machines ivt the three-quarter, one ipile* and ope mile and a haU starting posts. It appeared to be tho general opinion amongst tho trainers present that as many horses are slow in moving off from a standing start that greater success would bo ensured if tho horses wore walked up to the tapes. having received satisfactory information to tho effect that the Motueka Valley Handicap, won by Bouquet, was a hack event, they decided to dismiss the protest. Tho Wellington Metropolitan Racing Club have under consideration tho protest lodged against Bouquet at Lower Valley. The qualification for a hack at the latter races was for horses that had not been nominated for any race six months previous to date of meeting (Hack and Hunter Races excepted), and as Bouquet had been nominated for the Hurdle Races at tho last Auckland Winter Meeting, the owner of Royal Tar, whoso horse was second to Bouquet in one race at Lower Valley, claims that lie is entitled to tho stake won by Bouquet. Britoinarto and Black and Rod, in charge of their trainer, Mr S. Mercer, arrived from Dunedin by tho s.s. Flora yesterday, to fulfil their engagements at tho Wollington races. Both animals appear to bo in excellent condition.

Saracen, Golden Plover, Lady Zetland, Lottie and Arius aro the only Cup candidates that have arrived attho Xluttup to the present, and they are located at McNab’s Gardens. Eritomarto and Black and Red have put up at the Railway Hotel stables. Lower Hutl.

The Hutt Park Racecourse is looking very pretty just now. The totalisator offices and the lawn have been extended some little distance, which will provide more room for tho large number of people that are expected to witness this year’s Cup race. The final payment of 5 sovs for the Wellington Cup is due to-morrow night. Acceptances for the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting aro duo to-morrow night. By advertisement in another column, the secretary of the Wellington Trotting Club invites tenders f§r the luncheon and refreshment booths.

Tho secretary of the Egmont Racing Club has received from Miss Kilgour, of Auckland, a riband of light blue, with the inscription in floral ornamental design in gold, " 1895—E.H.5.P.5.—1895.’’ It is for the winning horse in the first Egmont Hack Sires Produce Stakes.

The secretary of the Poxton Racing Club announces that he will receive instructions from persons at a distance who wish to have money invested for them on the totalisator at tho Summer Meeting on the 22nd.
