By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Gopy right. * Sydney, January 15. Mr Alex. Oliver, President of the Land Appeal Court, sails for New Zealand to-day to make enquiries in connection with the fisheries of that colony on behalf of the Fisheries Commission of New South Walas. Brisbane, January 15. Considerable excitement prevails on the Charters Towers Stock Exchange owing to the receipt of heavy orders to purchase the scrip of various mines on behalf- of London speculators. This movement is explained by developments in the mines affected towards the end of last year. These developments were somewhat remarkable, rich stone being struck in the Brilliant and St. George mines. Received January 16, 8.15 p.m. Sydney, January 16.
A gentleman named Hall, recently deceased, after making a few. legacies, loft the bulk of his estate to establish, a consumptive home for respectable poor. Brisbane, January 16. . ' Sir Thos. MoHwraith hat sailed for England for the benefit of his health. Melbourne, January 16.
A splendid sample of hemp, 14 feet high, grown in Bast Gippsland, has reached the Agricultural Department. It is stated that hemp will grow to advantage in the district. - "
The Newport Breezing Works have made a concession of one-eighth of a penny per pound on freight tp London, and makes- a similar reduction in freezing charges on February shipments. Received January 17, 0.50 a.in. Melbourne, January ’l6.
The man travelling under.- the alias of Count Volasco has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on the charge of obtaining money under false pretences.
