From Our Own Correspondent. Mastebton, January 15. No loss than four deaths have occurred at tbo Akura Maori Fab during the past few weeks from a disease supposed to bo typhoid fever. The Natives are very much concerned about the matter, andvarc notv holding a lamentation, or “ tangi,” over the remains of the departed. The Masterton Borough Council has now a net debit of JUI2S 5s 2d. Nine factories in Masterton have, up to the present, been registered under the Factories Act. There are about 30 factories in the town. Forty-eight waggons, containing over 3000 sheep, were despatched from Masterton by special and ordinary trains this morning. - - The Masterton Borough Council has found that the tarring of footpaths is almost as good as, and much cheaper, than asphalting. .It has, therefore, decided to continue the work ot tarring. The footpath leading to the railway station is to be tarred at once. There are about 1200 gallons ot tar at the works. The North Wairarapa Liberal Association has resolved to hold a'special meeting on February 4th to discuss the rabbit question. The weekly meeting ot the North Wairarapa Liberal Association was held on Monday evening, Mr C. Hughes (president) occupying the chair, A circular was read from the Cauterbmy Progressive Liberal Association, suggesting an exchange of resolutions with other labour bodies, the holding of open air meetings, and the holding of a conference ot labour organisations just prior to tho general election. The Association decided that open air ■ meetings wero impracticable and unnecessary here. It thoroughly approved of tho suggested exchange of resolutions, however, and adopted the proposal regarding a conference, provided that such a conference was held at least six months prior to a general election. One new member, was elected. The balance-sheet for the supplementary testimonial to Mr A. W. Hogg. M.H.E, was submitted and' approved. - It was resolved that the next meeting be a special one, to rescind the rule fixing the quorum for meeting at 11, and to make tho quorum seven.
