Hiit,—Thoro are persistent ynmonrs circulated to-day that at the meeting of the Pubjic Works Committee, held last evening, a vote by ballot was taken., at which the voting was asi follows: —For Saturday, 1 • for Wednesday, 4 ; but that upon an bpou vote being taken the position was reversed. If this be so, sir, there is urgent need for that somewhat scarce commodity, backbone. That a councillor, should be afraid either- of his constituents or of a self-elected-.public .mentor is hardly to' be credited, but I am, credibly informed that more, than one of Our Civic Fathers has expressed personally strongly in favour of Saturday as being the only legitimate and reason able, day, but that he intends voting for Wednesday to. placate the advocates of that day., I cry, and every honest man will, cry, shame on a’ man who will secretly vote according to his convictions hut is afraid to openly avow them, and I trust this statement is merely a rumour and that the charge is a baaelessone-With reference to thereoommendation of the Public Works Committee as to the members of the conference, it seems very unfair that Lambton Ward should not bo represented at oil, and , this oversight should bo remedied. If the delegates are to be allowed to exercise’their individual judgment it may be very important that a Lambton Ward councillor should he ohbson, and I trust this, will he done. —I am, &c., Philo. 15th December,
