DAIRY INDUSTRY ACT.

TO TKE EDITOR. Sib,— Press telegrams giving the substance of this Act, now before Parliament, state that the Act provides for compulsory storage of butter for six days at least before shipment. Such a long detention is likely to have a - very prejudical effect upou the quality of a portion, of the butter which would be withheld from shipment for a period of from-17 to 21 days more than has hitherto been necessary. Such a detention must affect > the " price ‘ realised -' in London. .Hitherto it was possible on this coast to makb butter and^ despatch same, Up'totho Monday 'and perhaps up to Saturday for Auckland, prior to the sailing of fortnightly steamer, with Wellington the 'final port. If the six days’ detention is enforced, this butter and also that made for some days prior will miss a steamer and have to be stored for a further 14'-days before sailing, which will bo very, detrimental and cause delays from other business standpoints. ' It is to be hoped this' proposition may be amended, and that the Act will give the inspector discretionary powers to pass batter or cheese, ' the quality of which brand he is satisfied with from experience is the finest and entitled to that stamp. Perhaps a better method may be devised. The Government states it desires to assist the industry, but it Trust be acknowledged its assistance is very tardy and paltry when compared with" that of the neighbouring colonies towards assisting their dairy industries. Wcat is wanted on this coast is cheaper raiUge. If the Government is in earnest, a cheap through rail-: age rate should be fixed, as if the whole lino to ‘Wellington vas a Government line, and the House be asked to vote, as part of a subsidy .to assist the industry, the loss which the Hallway Department would sustain by reason of the Manawatu Hallway ■ receiving its' Itwful proportion, which would be the difference between (1) a certain mileage on the Government line and the 84 miles On the Manawatu line, and (2) the total mileage at the special rate. To put it shortly, mo Government having ths

railway constructed, should fix a low through rato and draw a largo trade, comptmsating tho Manawatn Railway out of a vote subsidising the dairy industry.—l aw, &c., A. 11. Moohe, Agent for Wallis Sous Co. Opunako, August Ist, 1894.
