In New Zealand, however, they beat the favourite in quite a new way, or at least they “ beat" the owner and public out of their dividends. TVamku started a red hot favourite and won the Second Hack Eaoe at Egmont hard held. The jockey, though, could not draw the 31b he had declared overweight, and once more the favourite was beaten, for Buckler got the money, and his backers ,£l4 10s dividend. ’Twas ever thus since horses feet were shod. Booties, the Steeplechaser, does not appear to be a very fast horse. He is sure, though. 3. Rollo has shifted from Napier Park to Kai'kora. His string consists of * Samoa, a three-year-old out of Pilgrimage, and a two-year-old by Hike —Phoenix, ...\ The following are the past winners of the Egmoht Steeplechase since 1887
Tie circumstance of a dead heat in a steeplechase at Warnambool (Vic.) is referred to : as an unusual thing by a Melbourne: paper, which cites previous cases. There was one at Egmont the other day, when Whalebone and Crazy Kate were not separated -by the judge, ; Whalebone also ran a dead heat once before in the Wellington Steeplechase with Oeo, when both carried lost. • ■; • After winning the Selling Race at Warwick
Farm (Sydney) recently Tho Koe was brought under the hammer, and was bought iu for £7O, all of which went to the funds of the club, as the mare had been nominated without reserve.
It wasn’t long before a horse on Iho other side was named Coolgardie. Broken Hill
was the last animal to win a rich stake. The generality of horses named after gold or silver mine's—the unlucky Silvermine was a notable instance—have had bad luck.
J. Griffiths, of Kaikore, has swapped Ben B. to Mr W. Douglas, of Te Mahanga for a three-year-old gelding by HiUo—Beligeuse—one of the big boned, raw sort, who will want a lot of time. Mr T. Taylor, who at one time kept the Wanstead Hotel, owns him.
Mr S. Hordern has bestowed the following names on his yearlings :—b c by Castor— Necklace, Cravat; b c by Castor—Frailty, Astronomer ; bl c by Robinson Crusoe -Lady Harden (imp.), Tho Skipper ; b f by Nordettfeldt—The Queen, Rebel Queen ; br f by Nordcnfeldt—Deborah, Dispute ; br f by Nordenfeldt—Golden Fleece, Golden Bay ; two-year-old br c by Hotchkiss—Onyx, Carbonado ; bl f, three years (imp.), by Exwing —Rhythm, Barn Dance ; and br or bl f, two years, by Cylinder—Ehythra (foaled to English time), Round Dance.’’ A report from Hawera says that £SOO has been offered for the hack, Wainkn. I don’t believe it.
