THE LABOUR MARKET.
OFFICIAL EEPOETS,
The May number of tho “ Journal of the Department of Labour" was issued yesterday, and well maintains the standard of excellence which the editor (Mr E. Tregear) has set up. In the review of the labour market for the month, tin; Journal states that the last month has been notable for. the meetings, that have been field in Wei-, lingtou and Ofirast'cfiurofi regarding the unemployed. Tfia Government have been doing all they can possibly do with justice to the Colony to assist the men out of work; but many people in both these places have been asking the Government to do impossibilities. With tfio works in hand and those about to he started the market will, it is hoped, fie considerably relieved, aided, it is suggested, by private enterprise.
The reports concerning the labour market show, that in Wellington the building and iron trades are still very dull without immediate signs of improvement. The boot trade is fairly brisk. The retail traders report trade fairly good, but money very tight. As to unskilled labour, during the month some 70 men have been placed on Government works, and it is expected there will he work found for a few more. At Pahiatua the labour market is reported to be well supplied. Many men aro waiting about for bushfelliug, which is expected to bo general at the end of the month. The Marton agent reports that there are fewer men travelling in search of work now than there was a few weeks ago, and is confident that when the bush contracts, are out they’ will pretty well ahsqrfi' all those capable of such work. The labour marfiat at Hun ter ville is'well supplied. Trade is dull at Mastertoq. At Wanganui trade Is fairly good, not many tradesmen out of employment. The unskilled labour market is fairly well supplied. Bushfelling, which will be general by the end of this month, will, no doubt, absorb those who are now out of employment.
