THE CHELMSFORD FLOATED. Auckland, May 19. The steamer Chelmsford has been successfully floated off at Tutakaka. The Rotomahana leaves to-night to bring her up to Auckland tor repairs. A MAN POUND DEAD. Auckland, May 19. A man named Findlay McDonald, a settler living alone on a homestead section at Waipu, has been found dead in his house. It is supposed that when found he had been dead three or four days. THE DEMAND FOR LAND. Christchurch, May 19. At a meeting of the Canterbury Progressive Liberal Association, a committee was appointed to wait on the Premier to further impress on him the desirability of Government purchasing land for settlement in the vicinity of Christchurch. PROPOSED PEOPLE’S HALL. Christchurch, May 19. It has been decided by the Canterbury Progressive Liberal Association to ask the Premier to grant a reserve next to the Magistrate’s Court, and at present occupied by old buildings, as a site for a people’s hall, wherein labour unions and other popular organisations could hold their meetings. It is proposed, should the site be obtained, to endeavour to construct the building by means of public contribution and subscriptions from the various organisations which will use it largely. NOVEL SCHEME OP CO-OPERATIVE LABOUR. Christchurch, May 19. A number of tailoresses who were recently discharged by the Kaiapoi Woollen Factory Company have commenced a cooperative experiment. They have been granted the use of St. John’s Schoolroom, -and have set to work to make up a quantity of garments, which will be disposed of at a “ sale of work ” to be held shortly. Greymouth, May 20. The coal export for the week was 3285 tons, and the export of timber for the week 54,483 feet. The Eeeftoh gold returns for the week are: —Alpine, 2220 z from 445 tons; Progress, 2190 z from 185 tons; Cumberland, 38oz from 55 tons. Westport, May 19. The coal export for the week ended today was 3340 tons.
