CONCERT OF CHAMBER MUSIC

A goodly number of enthusiasts braved the wretched weather last night and assembled at the Academy of Fine Arts to inaugurate the series of concerts to be given under the direction of Mr Tallis Trimnell and Mr Robert Parker, They were well rewarded for their enterprise, for a p ogramme of the highest class was gone through in a manner which was to be expected from the position and ability of the promoters. Gade’s lovely pianoforte trio ia F opened the concert, with Mr Parker at the leading instrument and Messrs Spademan and Edger as his coadjutors. Its beauties were admirably displayed, as were also those of Rheinberger’s fine quartet at the close of the evening, with Mr Trimnell at the piano and Mr J. Otto Schwartz (in addition to the players mentioned above) on the viola. The place of honour in the programme was given to Mozart’s quartet in D; a delightful specimen of this great master’s genius, which was finely played by Mr Schwartz (first violin), Mr Spackman, Mr G. Kennedy and Mr Edger, Schumann’s expressive 4 BlumensUick’ was played with much taste by Mr Trimnell as a pianoforte solo, and Mr Spackman joined Mr Parker in a musicianly performance of Handel’s fine violin sonata in A. Agreeable variety was given by the introduction of two songs by Mias Greig, whose pleasant voice and unaffected style were well displayed in Haydn's canzonet * Sympathy * and Cowen’s charming * Song of Morning.’ These concerts are educational in the highest sense, and wo hope the future ones will be well attended by all students and lovers of good music. The next will be given in a fortnight.
