SOLID SEWAGE.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,—Civis" sneering remarks, combined with ignorant assertions on the above aub« jest, encourage me to condemn atd brand the individual as an embodiment of conceit and speculative ideas. ' Civis * wonders if I have considered what my intercepting sewer involves. I beg to state it Is possible for me to give cost and construction in detail.alao prove that it is not necessary for the sower to bo 30ft deep as ‘Civis’ imagines. That my proposition for drainage in Wellington and treat* meat of sewage Is practical, remunerative, and not offensive, is beyond doubt. I will challenge 4 Civis ’ to locate &u installation of sewage irrigation which io a success, and especially with like disadvantages as Wellington. It may be interesting for me to quote a reply to a question put by a gontls* man at a meeting on 2*2nd April, 1893, called for the purpose of discussing the question of drainage for tho Borough of Poole (In Dorset, Eng’and). ’The Town Clerk said the Corporation had gone very carefully Into the question, and, after visiting several sewage farms throughout tho kingdom, came to tho conclusion that that scheme of drainage was not the best, (Bear, bear.)' A Mr 3. L. Baker at the same meeting said that only a few days ago he read of a town io Franco where cholera had been raging, and the chiefoauoo of that epidemic was because the sewage had been distrh huted over tho land from which tho people draw their water. Again Dr Wallace said ho believed tho timo was coming when it would ba considered highly improper to get rid of either in fresh or salt water the enormous mass of the mauurial products of the towns. In conclusion, I think lam justified in applying the same remarks to * Civis 1 as ho did to me, namely, * Fools rush in where angles fear to tread,* and trusting tho next subject be takes in hand he will treat with duo consideration end respect,—l am, &o ,
