The wife of Canon Prothero, of Westminster, committed suicide by jumping from a window. The deceased lady had been suffering severely from insomnia. (BY TELEGRAPH -OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Hastings, August I.

About ten o'clock this morning, Mr Andrew Graham reported to the police that a man. named Stewart Richmond, bad shot himself, at the Karamu Bridge. Hie age ia 22 years, and his brother, who Is about three years his senior, observed this morning that be appeared to be rather depressed in spirits. With a view of livening him up ho proposed to take him into Hastings, and call up the doctor eu route. With this object in view, he went into an adjoin' log apartment to that where the deceased was, to dress himself, and while he was ro engaged his brother, it appears, mide bis way to a sort of a cupboard where clothing and arms were kept. Here be got hold of a rifle belonging to another oidet, who ia In the Hastings Rifles ; and, having loaded it, he tied one end of a string to the Digger and the other end to bis foot and tired the weapon. The charge entered just above the nose, and blew the top of the head com* pletely off. The deceased was a very much respected young man, and only his peculiar state of mind seems accountable tor the com* mlttal of the rash act. Except ihe brother already mentioned, deceased has only two relatives in the Colony—an undo who has lately arrived, and an aunt living in or near Wellington. An inquest will probably bo held to morrow.
