The expenses of the French operations against the Dahomeyans is becoming a great drain on the public purse. Colonel Dodds, commandant of forces there, has been summoned to Paris to explain matters, # News has boon received that King Behanzin of Dahomey is appealing to the civilised world against the French aggression. COMMERCIAL, London, March 24. Three mouths* bills are discounted at 1§ per cent. The market is firm. Consols, 98, Now Zealand 4 per cent inscribed stock, 107 ; pet* cent do, 97£. Frozen mutton, second quality, 3£d per lb. Lamb, first quality, s|d. Seven per cent of the Duke of Argyle’s Brisbane beef, and 20 per cent of that shipped at Townsville, is bad. New Zealand forward sales are reported at a slight advance. Nothing la doing in spot lines.

One thousand cases of kauri gum were offered at to-day’s-suction, and 750 sold. Thor© was animated competition, and a general advance in prices. Fine pale selected brought Ll2 10s to Ll 3 j fine and scraped, LlO. The Arawa’s factory-made butter is selling at L96s to 100 s per cwt. Sugar, German beet, 14s 9d ; Java steady at 16a 6d. No. 1 beat Scotch pig iron, f.o.b. in Clyde, 40s 9d. A trial shipment of Queensland evaporated bananas realised LlB per ton.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) have received the following cablegram from their London office: Frozen meat—Mutton market dull, quotations unchanged since last telegram. Lamb market weak. Prime New Zealand lambs are worth, per car case, sjd per lb. Tallow—There is little demand. Pine mutton tallow is worth 37s per cwt, nominal value ; good beef tallow is worth 30a 6d per cwt.
