FOOTBALL

The Athletic Football Club's Half-mile Handicap for the trophy presented by Mr E. Davy came off at the Basin Reserve last evening. About 40 members of the club faced Mr J. M. King, who acted as handicapper and starter. From the start the whole field went off at a cracking pace, which had the effect of putting a great number of those who were not in good condition out of the race by the time the' first quarter had been run. In the final lap, Goldie, the scratch man, ran right up to his men, and at the north gate he, Galloway and Tripe were the only three in it. Goldie had Tripe beaten at the entrance to the straight, where the latter stumbled, and Galloway, coming with a rush, beat him for second place on the tape. Goldie started from scratch, Galloway and Tripe had 20yda start, the rest of the field getting handicaps up to COyds. Time, 2min 15 3-sseo. One of the matches arranged for the Athletic Club for Easter at Blenheim having fallen through, it is not unlikely that the latter will pay a visit to Kelson (instead of Blenheim), and there play the Albert Football Club. The Athletic Football Club first fifteen will be without the services of Goldie, and the second fifteen without the services of Beck and Wrigley, for the greater part of this season, players being amongst the Torpedo men picked to go to Nelson in connection with the work at the entrance to the harbour. The Athletic second fifteen will play the Carlton first at Newtown Park this afternoon, at 3 o'clock. The Athletic team will be picked on the ground, A fall muster is requested. Athletic first v.
