VOLUNTEER NEWS

A Government parade of the Guards was held last night, 42 ef all ranks being present under the command of Captain Paterson. After inspection by Lieutenant - Colonel Newall the company was exercised in com pany and battalion drill by Lieutenant Porritt, and then exercised in guard mounting by the non-commissioned officers. Prior to dismissal it was announced that Corporal Ford had been promoted to the position of coloursergeant. Ford has seen considerable service, having held a position as a non-commissioned officer in a Volunteer battalion in the Old Country, and for sight years was one of the smartest sergeants of the E Battery in Christchurch. Other appointments were also an* nounced aa follows :—Lance-Corporal Jones and Privates Jenkins to be corporals, and Private Oaton, Hill, Bould and Barrie to be lance-corporals.

The Wellington Rifles will parade at the Volunteer Drillshed to-night, at half-paet7 sharp, for Government inspection. A full muster is required, as arrangements will be made re the forthcoming camp. The company will fire a handicap match for Mr Blanche’s trophy on Saturday next, the 23th instant, at thp cadet range, Polhiil Gully, morning and afternoon squads. The conditions are I —A, B and C Classes, 10 shots each at 200 and 300 yards with sniders. Ammunition will be served out after Government parade tonight. The Petone Naval Artillery will hold a competition for all classes to-morrow afternoon at both ranges for the following trophies A Class, the D.X.C. ; B Class, Lieutenant Field's; O Class, Mr F. Sedgwick’s. The ranges will be 500 and 600 yards, 10 shots for all classes.
