DUNEDIN J.C. AUTUMN MEETING. (PRESS association.) Dunedin, February 22. Notwithstanding the lugubrious prognostications of the weather prophets ih® Dunedin Jockey Club were favoured with beautiful weather for the first day of their Autumn Meeting. Tbe attendance was not up to the best record, but it was very large, and ladies mustered largely to display their Cup dresses. Representatives were present from nearly every pare of the Colony, while many were from Australia. "Mr S. Powell officiate! as starter with his usual efficiency, and Mr W. Miller was judge. The Cup race was a • boll over;' it was in most respects a repetition of Occident’s victory lant year, as Tempest made her own running all the way. and was never really headed. Thame might have had more to say but for the accidental breaking away of a stirrup leather when entering the straight. Ic is understood that Mr Stephenson did not have a penny on his mare except in a double with Huguenot. Mr Hazlett, his partner, had LI, and the trainer LI. In the Selling Two-year-old, Buddicombe, who rode Viscount the winner, tailed to draw the weight, and a protest was entered, which will be considered to-night. The amount put through the machine was LB9IB, as against L10,95S on the same day last year. Results

The others were well together, but Gitano soon commenced to tail off. L>akeshell bad the lead rounding the bend and entering the straight increased it, with Spinaway next, Outpost third, and Response fourth. Rounding by the windmill Aw*rua Rose closed up to Thame, and Wyvern was last of a pretty compact field. At the halt-mile, post Awarua Rose was third to Tempest and Captive, and Glanranald was last, but still there was no straggling. When the mile and a distance bad been covered the order was still Tempest, Captive and Awa*ua Rose, and Thame was just heading Scot Free. Tempest and Thama were almost abreast, but Tempest still led by a little as they rounded into the straight. At this point the boy on Thame asked the mare to make her effort, but his stirrup pulled through the iron, leaving her rider in difficulties, Price coming almost off. Tempest then went on in feont, with Thame chasing her as best she could, and the local mare eventually won rather easily by a clear length, Prime Warden being three lengths away third, and then came Glanranald, Wyvern, Scot Free, Awarua Rose and Captive in that order, all pulling up.
