HARBOUR BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Harbour Board was hold yesterday afternoon, there being present—Messrs Bearce (who was voted to the elixir in the absence of Mr Cock), Booth. I’etherick, Speedy, Jack, Heaton, Wheeler, Captain Rose, and the Mayor. Leave of absence was granted to Mr Cock. FINANCE. The chairman reported the credit balance at the bank wae £1959 11 a 2d; imprest wages account, £275; and fixed deposit, £3OOO. The amount required for payment was £4103 la sd, made up au follows : Accounts and wogou, £2701 ISa Gd ; salaries for July, £431 2s lid ; progress payments ob contracts, £IO3O. The following recommendations by the "Wharves and Accounts Committee were agreed to ;—That the plan laid on the tahln for the construction of the face wall of the reclamation to the north of the Railway Wharf bo approved and forwaidecl to the Masino Department for the approval ot the Governor in Council, as required by the Harbours Act, and that on such approval being obtained tenders be called for the construction of the wall ; that the request of Captain Bendall for the cancellation of his foreshore license for a boafcshsd at Oriental Bay bo agreed to. A series of formal resolutions with regard to the pro. posed loan of £39,000 were also agreed to The committee aUo recommend—That Mr H. T. Twias bo appointed junior dork in the wharf office at a salary of £6O per annum in the place of Mr J, J. Curtis, who in resigning; that an iucrenao of £l2 per annum each 1 c granted to Messrs J. K. Cambio and A. Davies, third and fourth olo.k', Mr J, Jack, seconded by Mr Wheeler, moved that this recommendation be agreed to, Mr Heaton moved aa an amendment that no increases of salary should bo given to tbo clerical staif until the casual labourers had earned a fair week’s wage—sufficient to support their wives and families. The amendment lapsed for want of a seconder. Mi Jack’s motion was agreed to.
