An eleven from the Wellington Club journeyed to Otaki yesterday, where they defeated the local team by 36 runs on the first innings. The visitor*’ (kipper won the to*s, and elected to bat, but Silbury and Whilehoru very soon sent the first four wickets back to the pavilion, and it was not until the Wellington skipper, joined Littlejohn that the runs came freely, the board showing 58 when was thrown out, after compiling a useful 21. LittleJohn was beaten by Silbury shortly afterwards, and A, Meek having added 11, and Luckie 10, to the score, the innings closed for 109. H. Wbitehom (36) and W. Booth (14) were the only batsmen to reach double figures lor Otaki, young Frank Ashbolt, as usual, being the cause of the trouble, and, for the second time within a fortnight, secured four wickets with four successive balls, the victims being J. Swainson (Ute of the Wanganui Collegiate School), Death, Silbury and Purkiss. Ashbolt'* performance was a trifle better than the one against the Phoenix Club, as he secured the • iiat trick ’ and a wicket to spare in yesterday’s game, whereas the ‘trick’ was not performed in the Cup match, owing to a break which ensuf d between his second and fourth wickets. The Wellingtons scored 72 in their second attempt. B. Wilson, who faced the bowling at the fall of the eighth wicket, contributing 30 (not out) at a critical moment. Silbury and Whitehorn bowled well for the losers throughout the match. Tho Wellington team speak very highly of the hospitality of the Otaki players, who provided lunch, which was served in Host McCarthy's best style, and the ladle*,* who mustered in good numbers, supplied tea and sundry other good things, which were duly appreciated by their visitors.

An eleven of the • Phcenix Club were de. feated by a similar number from tho Rivals, after an interesting finish at the Basin Reserve yesterday, by three runs. The latter team batted first and scored 150, Marryatt being top scorer with 49, but he should have been caught by Millward when his score stood at 29, Dryden, who gave a chance to Niven in the out field, made 28, and Fuller, after hitting freely for 36, was well taken in the long-field by Waters. The Phceniciana responded with 147, Geo. Webb, who went in first and was the last man to lose his wicket, being top scorer with 99, but his innings was marred by the chances which he gave to Marryatt, and Baker, the wicketkeeper. Niven, after being let off before he had scored by the Rival skipper in the slips, showed his gratitude by putting together 2* before he was given out ibw to MoMaater. The latter player and Marryatt bowled well for the winners, and Webb, Waters, and Johnson divided honours for the losers.
