Archibald McKinnon, employed at Green Vale Station, was thrown from Ids horse while crossing the Pomahaka River, and drowned, Hokitika, Juno 11. At the Hokitika School Committee meeting, Mr Thomas H. Till, of Dunedin, M.A. of New Zealand University, was appointed Rector of the Hokitika High School, vice Mr John Qammell, promoted to the Inepoctorship.

A public farewell was accorded to Mr Reginald Bayly, late assistant land registrar here, who has been transferred to Wellington as chief clerk and accountant to tho Stamp Department. The Mayor, accompanied by tho Borough Councillors, Justices of the Peace, solicitors, and representative men of the district waited upon Mr Bayly and presented him with a beautifully illuminated address, recognising bis services to his fellow settlers during the Native wars, his courteous and efficient discharge of his official duties, and his efforts to serve the interest of the public in all matters of social improvement and interest. Mr Bayly, who has been captain of the Volunteers and Fire Brigade, and has always been prominent in matters of publio - interest, will bs very much missed, and his departure is generally regretted.
