I!v Electric Telegraph—Copyright. EXTENSIVE MILITARY PRECAUTIONS. ANARCHIST RIOTS IN PARIS AND ROME. (special. ) London, May 1. Telegrams show that the celebration of May Day on the Continent passed off quietly. Paris, May 1. Thirty thousand troops are massed in the city barracks in readiness should they bo required to quell any disturbance arising out of tho celebration of May Day. Tho Anarchists are under police surveillance, and the principal buildings are guarded. All public resorts have been closed in order to prevent an assemblage of the working class. Preparations are being made in all the principal cities of Europe against the possibilities of disturbance to-day by increasing the strength of tho military forces. (Received May 3, 6.10 p.m.) Pams, May 2. The celebration of May Day passed off quietly, with the exception of some Anarchist disorders. An attempt was made to wreck the mansion of the Marquis Treviso, a noted humanitarian, by dynamite, but without success. Forty thousand troops were garrisoned in the city to preserve order. Mr Cunningham Graham, a member of the English House of Commons, was conspicuous amongst the Anarchists, one hundred and fifty of whom were arrested. In a conflict between the rioters and the soldiers at Fourniers, one of the latter was killed. At Lyons the Anarchists displayed an attitude of hostility, and cut a hundred telephone cables. The officers commanding tho military threatened to employ cannon in dispersing tho mob, and the cavalry made repeated charges. Many of the rioters were taken into custody.
At Clichy the Anarchists fired upon the gendarmes, wounding several. Many of the leading Anarchists were arrested. From Marserles reports have been received that the Anarchists have been turbulent there. Rome, May 2. Three hundred Anarchists made an attack on the military in the city yesterday with revolvers and stones, and during the riot fourteen persons were injured, including Deputy Cypriani. At Florence a disturbance also took place, and the cavalry charged the mob. London, May 2.
Reports from Berlin, Vienna, and Brussels, state that the celebrations of May Day passed over quietly in those cities.
