The Portuguese-Boer-Africander incident has suddenly been deprived o£ all complication. The Portuguese and the Boers have both given way, and the South African Company is recognised as master in Maahonaland and Manica. The Portuguese have accepted the new arrangement and opened the Pungwe River to navigation ; and the Transvaal President has stopped thoßoerraid northward. That raid was simply a filibustering expedition, intended to take advantage of the AngloPortuguese complication. The collapse of the Portuguese being foreseen by President Kruger, the Boer raid collapsed also. In the result we recognise the master hand of Mr Cecil Rhodes. Ho sent the force forward which took up the vacant country, and when the force had accomplished its object he went to London to make the Government acquainted with the merits of the case. Mr Rhodes is still “ the great amalgamator.”
