The steamer Waihora, previous to leaving, went alongside the Railway Wharf and took aboard a number of cattle for the South. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s ship Nelson left London for Wellington on the 22nd instant, and is due about the end of !fho steamer Mawhera, from West Coast and Nelson, arrived here at 1 pm yesterday. _ Captain Manning reports very heavy seas in the Straits, several of which broke aboard, but fortunately did no damage. She brings a cargo of coal, and returns to Westport, Greyrnouth, Hokitika, Nelson, and Picton this afternoon. The steamer Kennedy, from the West Coast and Nelson, arrived at 1,15 pm yesterday. She left Nelson at 630 pm on Saturday, but owing to the heavy southerly gala and heavy seas anchored in Queen Charlotte Hound for eight hours. The eteamere Wareatea, Kawatiri, and Orawaiti, were also seeking shelter at the same place. The steamer Rotorua arrived here at 6.30 am yesterday from Lyttelton, and left atl o’clock for Picton and Nelson, The Wanaka, for Onehunga, via Taranaki and Nelson, sailed at 0 o’clock yesterday morning, having been detained through the boisterous weather. The Government steamer Hinemoa arrived ahortly after noon yesterday. Bhe left Onehunga at 0 pm on Saturday, and experienced hard southerly galea with heavy seas till arrival. The steamer Taieri, which put back on Sunday on account of the heavy weather, left for Westport yesterday afternoon. The Takapuna, from Onehunga and New Plymouth, arrives to-day, and sails for Lyttelton during the afternoon. The Waitapu sails for Havelock, Nelson, and Motueka on 'Thursday, at 5 pm. The Kahu sails for Castlepoint and Napier at 5 pm to-day. The Huia should arrive to-day from Wanganui, and the Stormbird loaves this evening. 'The Kennedy returns to Nelson and West Coast ports this evening. The Penguin arrives to-morrow from the South, and leaves for Nelson the same day. The steamer Waihora after arrival at Port Chalmers goes into dock for the purpose of having her periodical overhaul. The steamer Ohau, for Westport, left at 7 o’clock last evening, and the Rosamond, for the West Coast, left half an hour earlier. The Queen of the South, for Foxton, and Waihi, for Blenheim, left yesterday, the former in the afternoon and the latter lata at night.

SHIPPING SUMMARY, Shipping matters since the departure of the last San Francisco mail have been rather brisker than usual. Besides the usual direct steam communication between here and Great Britain several sailing vessels have arrived both from England and America with full cargoes. The frozen meat trade still keeps up, and large quantities leave almost every week by one of the direct liners. There have been no shipping casualties to report, either coastal or otherwise. Since our last Summary the barque Ladatock, from Liverpool, arrived on 21st January, with part cargo for Dunedin, for which port« she sailed on February 3rd. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Kaikoura left on the 22nd January with a Urge number of passengers and the usual quantity of frozen meat, wool and flax. The Tongariro, of the same line, arrived on January SOth, and left on February 19lh with the following cargo :—329 bales wool, 100 cases fruit, 1720 casks butter, 200 cases cheese, 100 casks gum, 1277 bales flax, and 5000 carcases meat. X’he R.M.S. Doric, which left for London on the sth inst, took V 22 bales wool, 583 bales flax, 8364 carcases mutton, 7899 pieces beef, 3876 lambs, 911 quarters beef, 1999 cases butter, and 357 boxes butter. The steamer Rangatira, one of the direct cargo boats of the Shaw-Savill Company, arrived from Napier on January 31st, and left again on the 2nd inst full of meat. The barque Marie Becker arrived here from New York with part cargo for Nelson. She loft America on October lltb, and experienced moderate weather on tho voyage. She left here again on the 19th inst. The ship G ripen left for New York on February 2nd. The ship Brahmin, leased by Shaw-Savill, sailed for London on February 12 with a full cargo of wool, flax, etc., valued at LOO,OOO, The cargo steamer Duke of Sutherland, under charter to the N.Z. Shipping Company arrived here on February 9 from the Coast, and left again seven days later with 36,000 carcases of mutton, 10,000 of which were taken aboard hero. On February 9 she spoke the ship County of Merioneth, 09 days out from London to Brisbane. The R.M.S. Arawa arrived on February 12, and left on the 19th for Napier, thence she goes on- to Lyttelton, where she will fill up for London. On January 14 on the voyage out a steerage passenger named Hta Metcalf gave birth to a female child. The barque Peri, from London, arrived also on the 12th inst., after a passage from London of 107 days. She experienced light and variable weather during the whole voyage. Most of her cargo ia out and has been landed in excellent condi l ion. The barque Valparaiso, from New York, via Dunedin, made Wellington on the 2oth inst., and has nearly completed discharging. On December 21 she passed two large icebergs, 200 feet in height, in iat 45degS., long 43deg, aOmin E. Her passage from America to our Colony occupied 122 days. The barque Cape Wrath is a full ship, and sails this week for London, Her cargo consists of 4100 bales wool, 450 bales flax, 700 casks tallow. She was loaded by the New Zealand Shipping Company. Her cargo is valued at 1.75,000. The Soukar has just completed loading, and will probably sail during the week for London. The barque Castor, of 2003 tons register, ia being loaded by the

New Zealand Shipping Company. Previous to being chartered she wan taken on tho Patent Slip, when it was found her bottom was covered with large barnacles over two inches in length. She was thoroughly cleaned and painted, and will leave about the middle of next month. Inter-island business is still on the increase, particularly so in regard to the coal trade between Wellington and the Weit Coast of the Middle Island. Tho Union Company are having more steamers built to keep pace with the increased trade.
