New Zealand Times Office, Friday Evening. A very fair amount of business has been transacted during th© past week, both as regards the town and country trade. A shipment of currants arrived by the Kakaia, and are selling at sid to s£d. Present stocks are almost exhausted. A shipment of sultanas which arrived last week have been sold at from B§d to 9d, and there are inquiries for more from outside Wellington, although the quality is not very good. Elemes, the st'ck of which is very light, are selling at oiq. With regard to the London market for suletc., a London firm reports as follows Sultanas—With a very short crop we have had a most excited market, and prices rapidly advancing. It is quite impossible to judge what the future course may be, hut figures must c mtinue high. At present they are 52s 6d to 54a Gd ex warehouse here ; 64s to 55s for direct shipment, c.i.f. colony. Figs—These require very careful buying this season, the first arrivals having been of inferior quality. The market is firm, and we are quoted 43s t« 45a, c.i.f. colony. Muscatels—A large crop is expected, and we anticipate that prices will

open at about the name figures as last season, the shipping demand always keeping prices up unnecessarily. Dates Brices talked about for the new fruit are high, 19s to 20s being quoted for ordinary brand**, c.i.f. colony, but we expect to buy much better later on. The Indian and Ceylon teas continue very firm. The latest advices go to show that the import of China tea to the colonies will not roach more than 16,000, OOOIbs, as against 21,000,0001bs for last year. Tno Wairarapa, which arrived yesterday, brought a fresh supply of Japan rice into the market, which wai quite bare. This article is selling freely at L3O per ton. The new rice, which will arrive in January, will come in at ft Sugars remain the same as last week. There is a fair demand for barbed wire, which is selling atL23 to L2Bloj. Milling wheat is in fair demand. Flour has had a slight decline, as millers seem inclined to cut prices to induce sales. Oats are rather bard of sale, and prices are a shade lighter. Bran and pollard—Fair sales have been made of the latter, while the former is almost unsaleable. ... Chaff—Oaten shea! is rather scarce, while straw oaten sheaf is slow of sale. The fresh butter market is glutted. There is very little doing in salt butter. There is no change in [paraffin candles at 7£d for fluted and plain. Soaps keep in good demand, and prices are likely to advance owing to the increased cost of chemicals. There is a good demand for domestic servants, female cooks in particular. At Messrs Stevens and Gorton’s monthly sale yesterday there was a large entry of stock of all kinds.
