PALMERSTON NORTH.

(from our own correspondent.) November 7. Mr C. O. Miles, secretary to the Manawatu and West Coast A.P. Aesocia* tion, informs me that the annual show, which is fixed for Wednesday and Thursday next week, bids fair to bo the most successful yet held, the entries to this date numbering upwards of 700. Over L4OO will be given in prize money, and nothing appears to have been left undone by the committee which, could tend to ensure public support. Weather being favourable, the financial results should be all that can be desired. It will be borne in mind that on the second day of the above show, the first annual exhibition of the Palmerston North Horticultural, Florioultural, and Industrial Society wiil bo held in the Theatre Koval, when there will be a promenade concert, which will greatly add to the attractions of the gathering. A very largely-attended meeting —of tradesmen and employes was held this morning in the Borough Council Chambers (his Worship the Mayor, Mr G. M. Snelson, presiding), to consider tho question of holidays, and the following arrangement was come to, viz.: —That Monday, tho Prince of Wales’ Birthday, shall be observed as a close holiday, and that as Thursday will be a gala day, all places of business shall be closed on that afternoon in lieu of the usual Wednesday afternoon holiday. For the management of holiday arrangements in the future, a committee was elected by those present, Mr W. Park being appointed chairman. An interesting feature of Wednesday’s meeting of tho Borough Council was the proposal to establish swimming baths, the estimated cost of which is about LBOO. It was resolved to let the right to establish baths, and there appears to be every probability that the scheme will be successfully carried out under the Council’s rules and regulations. The Palmerston North Bowling Green was informally opened on Wednesday, and several games were played. I learn from the proprietor, Mr Walkley, who has been at great expense in making the ground one of the prettiest and best in the North Island, that several gentlemen have to-day given their names as now subscribers. The formal opening will take place on Monday.
