PALMERSTON NORTH.

(KliOM OUR OWN COURESP; NDEST.) April 18.

It is intended at a very early date to call a mooting of the ratepayers to consider the question of purchasing Ihe gasworks ; and taking it for granted_that the figures shown by Messrs Coates and Co., the projectors and present owners of the concern are correct, I should say, without question the borough, in its own interests, ought to take over the works and reap the benefit of what must ultimately he a paying investment. Onr gallant, hard working, and most enthusiastic Fire Brigade, which, at the Volunteers late competition at Wellington so signally distinguished itself, winning (facile princeps) in the chief event five gold medals and a douceur of LlO in cash, does not receive in Palmerston the amount of support to which it is fairly entitled, and which the Palmerston people, in their own interests, should he only too glad to afford. I believe it is intended shortly to make a house.to-houso canvass, soliciting subscriptions from one shilling upward, to enable the Brigade to pay off certain liabilities, which, as a volunteer body, they should not have to face, and to increase in every possible way the efficiency of the corps and the safety of the town. In this movement the various insurance offices interested may, 1 think, ho fairly asked to take part. The copious showers of the last few days are doing great good to the country. It looks at present as though we shall have a spoil of rain, the glass being now at 29 - 5, with a further downward tendency. There was to-day, about noon, an alarm of fire, the cause being a. foul chimney at Mr Welch’s dwellinghouse, adjoining the Square. The Fire Brigade, with hose and reel, wore promptly on the spot, but Mr Welch had himself averted all danger before their services could be brought to bear.
