CITY COUNCIL.

1 The usual fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last evening. Pre-sent—-The Mayor, Councillors Petheriok, Fraser, Worth, Brown, Harris, Willeston, Anderson, Moeller, Brandon, Smith, and Harcourt. Claim fop. Extra Work.—A letter from Mr A. Macguire, with reference to a claim for extra work in connection with the coni Crete wall running from the Queen’s wharf , to the bottom of Cuba street, was referred to the City Surveyor for his report, and it was decided to inform Mr Macguire that he could wait upon the Public Works ComI mittee at their next meeting with regard to the matter. Tenders.—Two tenders were received for the supply of 500 yards of road metal, and that of Mr G. H. Bay lis was accepted. City Reserves Committee. —This Committee recommend (1) that notice boards should be put up on the Thorndon esplanade as applied for by Mr G. Woodward ; (2) that possession be resumed of the portion of the Town Hall Reserve held by Messrs Levin and Co,, and that the whole of the land which had no buildings on it be put up for lease iu convenient divisions. The area to be let would be about 60ft by 78ft, and the corner piece about 40ft square. It was decided, on the motion of Councillor Brown, to refer Ihe second clause of the report back to the Committee. Fire Brigade Committee.—The Fire Brigade Committee reported that the Captain, in his half-yearly report, recommended the purchase of some articles which he con. sideied necessary for the service of the Brigade, and also that the 26 iron standards be fitted with round thread and ratchet valves. The Committee recommended that tenders be invited for supply of the above. The Committee further recommend—That the Captain be empowered to purchase an additional horse with harness for same ; that tenders be invited for painting all the Fire Brigade Stations except the station at Brandon-street, which will first require some repairs; that an electric lamp be placed in front of the station at Donald MoLean-street; that the Government be asked to put the Hill-street Station in repair ; that the Captain be allowed to employ temporary assistance for cleaning and repairing hose when he finds it necessary. After considerable discussion, it was decided to refer the report to the next Public Works meeting. Public Works Committee.—This Committee’s report was read and adopted as printed. Annual Reports.—The Town Clerk presented his annual report of the work done by the Council during the year ; and the City Surveyor also presented a report dealing with the works carried out during the year. It was decided, on the motion of Councillor Fraser, that copies of the report should be printed and circulated amongst Counoillors. Clyde Quay and Oriental Bay.—With regard to the application for work at Clyde Quay and Oriental Bay, the Finance Committee reported that they, were unable to provide for the expenditure required to do all the work needed. They could only recommend that the City Surveyor be instructed to effect such repairs in the way of metalling the roadway and forming the footpath as he was able to do with the means at his disposal. The report was adopted. New Drain.—lt was decided to replace the box drain in Motnroa street with bricks, at a cost of £l2O. Accounts.—Accounts amounting to £SBB 10s were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.
