Dunekin, March 25.

At Naseby to-day.-Thomas Keenan, a butcher, was charged with unlawfully, knowingly, and wilfully making a false statement regarding his property to the Property Tax Commissioner, and omitting a large quantity of his property. Evidence was given to show that the defendant had £3OOO to his credit in the bank whioh was not mentioned in the return, and he bad twice the number of sheep returned. The defendant pleaded guilty, but said it was not done with intention to defraud. The Resident Magistrate thought the case a flagrant one, and an example should be made. Ho fixed the fine at £IOO, beside whioh he will have to pay three times the amount of tho tax itself, and £l3 costs.
