Assault.-- Louisa-Smith was charged with hiving, ou the Bth instant, assaulted and beaten one Isabella Ritson. The defendant did not appear, and Mr Jellicoe, who appeared for the prosecution, asked that a warrant should be issued for her arrest on the charge of common assault. For the second charge, which was an indictable offence, namely, of wounding, it was stated it had been laid in consequence of the report of tbe medical man who bad attended the complainant. The Bench decided to hear the charges against Sarah Ackroyd, who was then called, and pleaded not guilty to assaulting Isabella Ritson on the Bth instant. Mr Jellicoe did call any evidence, and the case was dismissed. Mr Jellicoe then asked that the indictable charge against Louisa Smith Rachel Ackroyd should be proceeded with. In the absence of Mrs Smith, Mr Travers objected to this. Mr Jellicoe said his reason for going on with the case at once was because one of the accused had temporarily at any rate, escaped justice, and he was not going to give the other a chance. The Bench decided to remand the case until Friday next, Ackroyd being released from custody on her own recognisance of LlO and two sureties of L 25 each. ’ __
