Last Sunday morning there died one of our business men, Mr Thomas Moore, who settled here in 1880. For some time past he had been suffering from failure of the heart’s action. Few residents here had interests so numerous and widereaching, as he was not only the leading church officer in the Methodist Church and Superintendent of its Sunday School, but also till very lately was captain of the Yolunteers, and at the time of his death was secretary to the Foresters, Oddfellows, and Orange Lodges. He had formerly been Chairman of the School Committee and Road Board, and was a member of the first Town Board. As he only resigned the captaincy of the Rifle corps a couple of months ago, it was determined to give him a military funeral, and the Volunteers accordingly turned out, while the other societies with which he was connected also mustered and followed him to the grave, together with a large number of friends, making a corthge of about half a mile in length, the largest ever seen here. A requisition has been signed by the Yolunteers asking Mr J. D. Gillies to take the captaincy, as Captain Newson, who was elected on Mr Moore’s resignation, has resigned, as he finds it impossible to attend to the duties. However, as Mr Gillies’ stay here is very uncertain, ho does not see his way to take the post, which is a very great pity. Last Wednesday was a public holiday on account of the opening of the Waipawa Exhibition. Excursion rates ruled on the train, and about 70 went from Woodville, including the band. There is to be a band contest next Saturday, and the Woodville band intends to try conclusions with the others which may attempt to win honours there.
